More than 97% of the world's population lives in areas with air pollution index in excess of recommendations, EPIC confirmed in the latest report on the air quality index.
Epic emphasizes that if the concentration of fine dust PM2.5 (tiny dust floating in the air can penetrate and damage the lungs) decreases to the recommended level of 5 micrograms/m3 of the World Health Organization (WHO), the average life expectancy of the world population may increase by 2.2 years.

Research also shows that the average life expectancy of Chinese population has increased by about 2 years since 2013, when the country launched a "war against pollution" to cut 40% PM2.5 in the air.
According to Reuters, the survey of pollution data was published earlier this year showed that no country in 2021 reached a standard 5 micrograms/m3 standard as WHO recommended.
